On Wednesday 8 May 2024, West Suffolk Council will be offering free compost to residents in Brandon Country Park, providing a valuable resource to help enrich gardens and landscapes across the area.

The compost on offer is a result of the garden waste materials collected by West Suffolk Council’s bin crews in and around Red Lodge. Composting keeps approximately 12,000 tonnes of garden waste out of landfill sites, while creating nutrient-rich soil amendments for gardens and plants.

West Suffolk Council spokesperson said: “We are thrilled to provide free compost to our local community as a thank you to residents using the garden waste facilities available. Compost not only reduces waste, but improves soil health, fosters sustainable gardening and conserves resources by returning organic matter to the soil. By using compost, individuals can play a vital role in building a more sustainable and resilient future.”

The free compost will be available while stocks last from midday at Brandon Country Park, near the visitor centre. Residents are encouraged to bring their own shovel and bags to collect the compost. In addition to providing the compost, there will be general waste, recycling and home composting techniques and advice available from staff and volunteers.

The compost volunteers will also be bringing a live wormery to demonstrate and educate the community on how worms can be used to break down food and garden waste.
