Cemeteries run by West Suffolk Council

Cemeteries we manage

West Suffolk Council owns and manages Bury St Edmunds Cemetery and Haverhill Cemetery.

In April 2017 West Suffolk Council took on certain management responsibilities for Newmarket Cemetery on behalf of Newmarket Town Council which remains the site owner.

Charter for the bereaved

West Suffolk Council has held the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) Charter for the Bereaved since 2014.  The council currently holds a silver standard in the bereavement assessment process for burial.

In order to become a member of the Charter for the Bereaved, a burial authority must show that is is able to satisfy basic charter rights connected with funerals. The charter also contains objectives and targets that help authorities set priorities for future development and improvement.

Closed churchyards

West Suffolk Council also maintains an additional fifteen closed churchyards. Details of our maintenance responsibilities can be found on: Closed churchyards maintained by West Suffolk Council
